James H. Bloem


Jim Bloem retired on December 31, 2013, after 13 years as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM).  In that capacity, in addition to being responsible for all accounting, actuarial, financial, tax, risk management, treasury, and investor relations activities, he also helped develop business growth strategies, including the integrated care delivery model, with a focus on industry-leading primary care, pharmacy, health and wellness, and the application of new technology to health benefits and care.  During his tenure at Humana, Mr. Bloem was consistently recognized as a leading CFO by both the Wall Street Journal and Institutional Investor.

Prior to Humana, Mr. Bloem worked as an independent financial and business consultant based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, serving national and international clients (two years).  Prior to that, Mr. Bloem served as Executive Vice President, then as President of the Personal Care Division of Perrigo Company, (NASDAQ: PRGO) the nation’s largest manufacturer of over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, personal care, and nutritional products for the store brand market (four years). Prior to that he served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Herman Miller, Inc. (NASDAQ: MLHR), an international manufacturer of office furniture and furniture systems (seven years). Before that, Mr. Bloem served as Vice President and General Counsel of Herman Miller, Inc. (two years).  Prior to his corporate career, Jim was a partner specializing in taxation and corporate practice in the Grand Rapids law firm of Law, Weathers (seven years), and before that as a tax accountant with BDO Seidman (two years), also in Grand Rapids.

Mr. Bloem holds a law degree from Vanderbilt University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. His undergraduate degree is from Calvin College. He also is a Certified Public Accountant.  

Mr. Bloem also is (1) Director of Actavis, plc., (NYSE: ACT) 2013-present; (2) Chairman of the Board, ResCare, Inc. 2007-present; (3) Director of Rotech Healthcare, Inc. 2005-present; (4) Director of Bissell, Inc. 1982-1995, and 2002-present; (5) Director of Imperial Clinical Research Services, Inc. 2000-present; (6) member of the Michigan Bar Association 1975-present; (7) member of the Financial Executives International 1989-present; (8) member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants 1979-present; (9) member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants 1979-present; (10) Chief Fund Agent, Class of 1977, Harvard Business School 1982-present; (11) member of the Dean’s Advisory Board, Vanderbilt Law Alumni 2000-2006; (12) Trustee, The Kentucky Center of the Arts 2001-2009; and (13) Elder, Calvin Presbyterian Church, Louisville 2001-2006.
