Ballenger Creek

Frederick, MD (May 18, 2020) – Ballenger Creek Center, a post-hospital rehabilitation and long-term care facility located in Frederick, Maryland today announced it will temporarily convert to a coronavirus (COVID-19) post-acute care center in order to assist hospitals in expanding capacity during this unprecedented crisis.  This facility will assist in the care and recovery of patients with COVID-19.

As the COVID-19 pandemic expands exponentially in Maryland, Ballenger Creek Center is poised to assist hospitals who are inundated with COVID-19 patients.  Ballenger Creek Center is responding to the Public Health Emergency in Maryland due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As Frederick Health prepared for a surge in COVID-19 patients requiring hospital care, it was critical that we work closely with our post-acute partners to determine how best to care for COVID patients across the continuum,” stated Heather Kirby, Frederick Health Vice President, Integrated Care Delivery. “Ballenger Creek Center immediately engaged in conversations with Frederick Health to creatively think about how we, as a community, could work together to avoid a situation where we have hospitalized patients who are ready for discharge to a skilled care facility, with no place to go. We are pleased with Ballenger Creek Center’s decision to transition to a COVID-19 positive patient facility. The Center will provide a much-needed resource in our care continuum, providing well-trained and equipped staff and ensuring our patients and our community receive excellent care close to home. We are thankful for the quick work of this center to create this much needed resource in our community during this unprecedented time.”

"As we treat increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients, it is clear that patients require ongoing care even after they have sufficiently improved to be discharged from the hospital,” continued Kathy J. Weishaar, MD, Frederick Health Vice President, Medical Affairs. “For some patients, post-hospital needs are significant and are best accomplished in a skilled nursing facility. Through the efforts of Ballenger Creek Center, our providers can be confident that COVID-19 positive patients will continue to receive high-quality care after their hospitalization, resulting in a more rapid return to their regular activities. I applaud the Center for their leadership, innovation and efforts to preserve our ability to deliver high-quality post-acute care during these historic, unprecedented times."

Ballenger Creek Center plans to safely discharge patients testing negative for COVID-19 to home, if their current health status permits, or will safely transfer patients to near-by affiliated facilities where their care will be continued. The Center will work to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for all of the patients.

Ballenger Creek Center plans to start admitting COVID positive patients on May 18, 2020.
